Is moisturizer a cure for dry skin ?

Author Dr. Yuchia Huang

Dry skin is a common problem for many patients. It doesn't look good, and makes the skin very itchy. Many people tend to use moisturizer to seek for a cure. However, moisturizer isn't a solution, but rather more like a pacifier. The fundamental cure is to internally relocate the body's water in order to prevent a reoccurrence.

Does dry skin mean that your body is lacking water?

Dry skin is only the result. We need to analyze its root cause. In my experience, people with dry skin are not really lacking moisture in their body; instead, there is too much wasted water. Therefore, we need to“relocate” the water, drain the wasted water and direct the fresh water to the dry area, rather than simply adding more water.

The key point for curing dry skin is to relocate water.

This teenage patient suffered from dry skin (Atopic dermatitis) since her childhood. She used both oral and topical steroids, but the treatment didn't go very well.

Taking Chinese herbs for just one week without any topical medication, we can clearly see the difference. TCM also cured her dysmenorrhea , constipation and long-term fatigue. Her face turned from pale to rosy. It was all about dealing with the water balance in her body.

TCM can treat other physical problems simultaneously with a longer lasting cure

Skin improvement actually lies in the adjustment of the imbalance of the body, and the essence of TCM treatment is to deal with it. Therefore, not only the skin gets better but other physical problems will also be cured. Moreover, TCM focuses on fundamental causes. In this way, the cure is much longer lasting compared with topical treatment.

The skin cycle takes about 28 days, so you can see the improvement of other physical problems earlier than skin improvement. In this way, we can easily understand that it is quite common to get feedback from patients that all of their skin is much more tender even though the chief complaint was something unrelated.
